Tooth Fairy Giving Drops for First Time in 5 Years, According to Delta Dental Poll

Posted on Thursday, February 22, 2024

The slowing of U.S. inflation has trickled down to the Tooth Fairy.

New Delta Dental findings from its 2024 Original Tooth Fairy Poll® revealed the average value of a single lost tooth during the past year declined by 6% from $6.23 to $5.84. This represents the first year-over-year decline in Tooth Fairy giving in five years.

While the loss of a first tooth typically commands a premium, the poll also found the Tooth Fairy is minding her pennies in celebration of this milestone with the average value dropping from $7.29 to $7.09 over the past year.

"Delta Dental has tracked U.S. Tooth Fairy giving trends for 26 years as a timely way to spotlight the importance of children's oral health," said Gabriella Ferroni, Senior Director, Strategic Communications, Delta Dental Plans Association. "It is not a surprise to see she tightened her purse strings following last year's record high. Despite the more economical reward, Tooth Fairy giving is a fun conversation starter to encourage good oral hygiene habits at an early age."

The worth of a lost tooth and the economy

Historically, the Original Tooth Fairy Poll® has typically mirrored the economy's overall direction, tracking with the trends of Standard & Poor's 500 Index (S&P 500). However, in 2023, the value of a lost tooth went in a different direction, and it continues in 2024. The average value of a single lost tooth decreased 6% over the past year, while the S&P 500 experienced a 20% increase during the same period.

U.S. regional ranking for the average value of a lost tooth

1. West ($8.54): Surged ahead of the pack to lead U.S. regions with the highest monetary gift for a lost tooth, marking a 37% increase since last year's results.

2. Northeast ($6.87): Increased 12% and surpassed the national average by more than $1.00.

3. South ($5.51): Dropped below the national average, after leading last year with $6.59 for a lost tooth.

4. Midwest ($3.63): Significantly trailed the national average with a 36% drop, returning close to its 2021 average of $3.66.

About the poll

The Original Tooth Fairy Poll® was conducted between Jan. 3, 2024 and Jan. 17, 2024, among 1,000 parents of children ages 6 to 12. The margin of error is +/- 3%.

The January 2023 S&P 500 average was 3,942 and increased to an average of 4,746 for January 2024, consistent with the timing of the Original Tooth Fairy Poll®.

3D Systems Introduces Industry’s First Multi-material, One-piece Jetted Denture Solution

Posted on Thursday, February 22, 2024

• Unique dental materials enable production of superior monolithic dentures, combining beautiful aesthetics with outstanding performance, yielding a market-leading denture solution

• Distinctive break-resistance ensures long product life, meeting a critical patient requirement

• Glidewell, the world’s largest dental lab, plans to implement 3D Systems’ new denture solution in 2024

• New denture product family dramatically expands company’s addressable dental market, with denture demand estimated to exceed $2 billion by 2028

Today, 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) introduced a first-to-market solution for jetted, monolithic (one-piece) dentures that utilizes multiple materials to deliver a durable, long-wear, aesthetically beautiful prosthetic to the patient. This is enabled by the formulation of bespoke materials for both teeth and gums. These unique materials deliver the desired combination of aesthetics, wear- and stain-resistance in the teeth, with exceptional break resistance (toughness and strength) in the gums. This combination results in a denture product that is superior to all other currently available, monolithic, jetted denture solutions. When these materials are used as part of 3D Systems’ complete workflow solution comprising materials, jetted 3D printing technology, software, and services, high-volume dental laboratories can more efficiently deliver dentures with improved performance and aesthetics, resulting in a superior patient experience.

3D Systems’ materials scientists developed NextDent® Jet Denture Teeth and NextDent® Jet Denture Base — the former uniquely formulated to mimic tooth rigidity and aesthetics, and the latter to absorb impact. When these materials are used as part of the company’s monolithic jetted denture solution, dental labs are able to produce dentures with exceptional performance, including high break resistance, a particularly important customer need. Additionally, the speed of 3D Systems’ jetting technology combined with monolithic denture printing accelerates total production rates in order to significantly reduce time to completion resulting in expedited delivery to the prosthodontist and patient.

In recent months 3D Systems previewed this solution to select customers including Glidewell, the world’s largest producer of restorative dental devices. Stephenie Goddard, CEO, Glidewell shared, “Glidewell prides itself on being on the forefront of technology, and continually bringing innovation to the dental community. Therefore, we need to collaborate with solution providers who share our vision for the power of transformative innovation. As a long-time 3D Systems customer, Glidewell continues to be impressed by the company’s leadership in digital dentistry. The capabilities presented by the new jetted denture solution are unmatched in the industry. The combination of 3D Systems’ high-speed printing technology and its unique materials deliver dentures with superior durability and aesthetics. I’m looking forward to our implementation of this solution later this year, and the benefits it will deliver not only for our business but for our customers and their patients.”

“With each innovation to our digital dentistry portfolio, 3D Systems has been able to help our customers transform the devices they deliver, and how clinicians deliver patient care,” said Chuck Stapleton, vice president & general manager, dental, 3D Systems. “As we announce our jetted denture solution today, I’m proud that we are once again delivering a truly unique offering to the market. We’ve combined innovation in materials and 3D printing, with software, post-processing, and applications expertise into our monolithic jetted denture solution, designed for high-volume production with unparalleled accuracy, repeatability, and lower total cost of operation. I look forward to seeing this solution change the trajectory of denture production, not only over the coming months but in the years to follow.”

The company anticipates 510(k) clearance from the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for its solution in the second half of 2024.

The adoption of 3D printing to produce prosthodontics continues to accelerate, driven by benefits to both manufacturers and patients alike. According to 360 Research Reports, the global 3D Printed Dentures market size was estimated to be more than $1 billion in 2021 and is forecast to reach more than $2 billion by 2028. With 3D Systems’ digital dentistry solutions including its solution for the production of monolithic dentures, dental laboratories and clinics are able to produce dental devices at dramatically increased speed, while reducing material waste and capital equipment expenditures. Patients also experience significant benefits, through reductions in the time it takes to receive their prosthodontics, as well as the number of required office visits.

3D Systems will showcase its new monolithic denture product line along with the breadth of applications addressed by its digital dentistry solution portfolio at LMT Lab Day, to be held February 22-24, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago (Illinois). Attendees are invited to visit the company’s booth (A-43, B-42, East Exhibit Hall) to learn more about how 3D Systems’ portfolio of entry-level dental 3D printers, mid- and large-platform 3D printers, rapidly scalable workflows and growing range of validated NextDent materials can help expand labs and clinics. Additionally, the company will highlight how it has validated the NextDent materials portfolio to perform across a wide selection of the industry's most trusted 3D printers. Attendees are also invited to participate in 3D Systems’ seminars to be held in the Comiskey Room, West Tower, Bronze Level. For more information, please visit the company’s website

Passion for Full Dentures: KunstZahnWerk (KZW) Competition 2025

Posted on Thursday, February 22, 2024

Candulor announces the 14th International KZW Competition. This year, the dental specialist from Switzerland once again focuses on full denture prosthetics with its renowned competition and honors international talents with valuable awards.

The KunstZahnWerk Award from Candulor will once again be presented at the same time as the IDS in Cologne in 2025. Registration is now open and interested participants should be able to register by July 19, 2024 at the latest.

This KZW is again about solving a patient case which requires technical dental skills, precision and a methodical approach. The case requires the fabrication of an age-appropriate, characterful, esthetic, mucosa-supported maxillary and mandibular full denture.

A pronounced atrophy of the mandible represents a real challenge for the participants. The work should be fabricated using the GERBER set-up method (tooth-to-tooth relationship) and must be submitted in a CANDULOR articulator or a partially or fully adjustable articulator.

Oliver Benz, Head of Education at CANDULOR, comments: "As with every KZW, the primary goal should be 'usability,' consisting of functional, material and esthetic aspects. In our opinion, the GERBER set-up method with its multitude of approaches to a solution is ideal for this case. The use of this technique is the condition to achieve an esthetically perfect result."

Particular attention is placed on a detailed model analysis as well as meaningful documentation presenting the fabrication of the restoration. As documentations are also awarded with prizes, they represent an important part of the competition. In addition, the best documentations are published in various professional journals and thus create good publicity for dental professionals.

The best entries are selected by an independent jury of prosthetics experts and practitioners. On the one hand, the achieved patient comfort and the fulfilling of the patients’ wishes for better hold, increased chewing performance and natural esthetics are evaluated. And on the other, the jury evaluates particularly the plausibility of the model analysis, the set-up of the teeth and the characterization of the dentures according to predefined criteria. The three best entries will be awarded.

The most important information at a glance

• Registration deadline: July 19, 2024

• Submission of the completed works/documentations: January 12, 2025

• Award ceremony and announcement of the rankings: March 28, 2025

All further information and the registration form can be found on the CANDULOR website: www.candulor.com. If you have any question, please contact the CANDULOR Team on +41 44 805 90 00.

U.S. Oral Surgery Management Partner Practices Earn “World-Class” Net Promoter Scores Year-After-Year

Posted on Thursday, February 22, 2024

Once again, U.S. Oral Surgery Management (USOSM) surgeon partners have achieved world-class Net Promoter Score™ (NPS) status, earning an overall NPS of 86 for 2023. NPS system founder Bain & Company designates any score above zero as “good,” with above 50 as “excellent” and above 80 as “world-class.”

According to reputation management company Birdeye, USOSM’s surgeon partners consistently achieve an overall NPS of 80+, and those numbers have gone up year-over-over. This is particularly significant, when taking into account that the average NPS for the entire healthcare industry is approximately 58. In addition, it’s higher than the reported NPS for successful retail and restaurant giants, such as Amazon (NPS 73), Netflix (NPS 67), and Chick-fil-A (NPS 58).

USOSM is a management services company that works exclusively with premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Founded in November 2017, the company was the first of its kind. Widely recognized as a leader in its space, USOSM now has approximately 230 surgeon partners -- all of which, achieve an NPS of 80+, year-after-year.

“Very few companies worldwide can say that they consistently achieve an NPS of 80+. Patient satisfaction is extremely important to us,” said USOSM President and CEO Richard Hall. “We’re committed to providing our surgeon partners with the support they need to create outstanding experiences for their patients and their families.”

USOSM recommends its partner practices send NPS survey questions to every patient. To eliminate bias, the surveys are sent through a third-party, which records responses and calculates NPS in real time.

“These short surveys provide timely and valuable insight into the patient experience, so that we can identify and address any areas that have room for improvement,” added Hall.

Surveys are sent out with questions asking for a rating on patient experience from zero to 10, with zero being the worst and 10 being the best. Survey respondents are separated into three categories:

· Promoters, who give ratings of nine or 10. These are usually loyal patients, who refer others.

· Passives, who give ratings of seven or eight. While not necessarily dissatisfied, these lukewarm respondents are more likely to seek alternative healthcare in the future.

· Detractors, who give ratings of zero to six. In general, these are dissatisfied patients, who are more likely to give bad reviews.

NPS measures customer experience, tracks customer loyalty, and helps predict and influence business growth. Scores are calculated by subtracting the percentage of detractors from the percentage of promoters. This means the rating can range anywhere from -100 to +100. A score that’s above zero suggests that the practice has more promoters than detractors, which is why anything above zero is considered a “good” score.

Headquartered in Irving, Texas, USOSM sets the standard for oral and maxillofacial surgery management. A management services organization spanning 26 states, USOSM has built a best-in-class network of premier oral and maxillofacial surgeon partners. USOSM provides operational, financial and administrative support services to fuel clinical excellence, innovation and wealth-creation. Visit: https://www.usosm.com.
